Best ways to get out of federal debt
A country accrues federal debt when it spends more money than it generates. It is no different that a person spending more money than they make. A country can try to bridge the gap by issuing out bonds to investors, sometimes at higher rates to attract more investors. The bonds are repaid after a specified period of time, plus whatever interest is due. The United Kingdoms federal debt is primarily made up of unpaid bonds.
One way to start reducing the federal debt is too increase taxes and cut out some public services. This is a good idea on paper but can be quite difficult to execute. If lawmakers increase taxes, that could mean less money for taxpayers to spend on necessary things. Deciding which services to cut can also be quite difficult. Will it be some service that helps the elderly and children, or will it be some service that benefits the rich? Unfortunately, the programs that benefit the least powerful demographics usually get cut first.
When trying to reduce the federal debt, lawmakers need to be careful not to plunge the country into a long recession or depression. One way to reduce the federal debt would be to increase the tax on areas that will not harm the nation. Such areas could include taxing goods where there is a high percentage of export. This would not be an import duty but additional sales tax.
Lawmakers can also reduce the final salary pension commitments in the public sector, but not affect those that are already receiving a pension. They can also raise the retirement age immediately and give the people the option to continue working if they decide to do so. Lawmakers can also reduce funding to universities that offer degrees that do not benefit the nation. Cutting back on benefits for those able to work but choose to remain unemployed and collect government benefits is another way to reduce spending.
Some of these ideas may seem harsh to some but if steps are not taken to reduce the federal debt now, the economy of the United Kingdom can be permanently damaged.
